August 6, 2019 marked the 74th anniversary of the atomic bombing of the Japanese city of Hiroshima.paper help free In addition to the abolition of nuclear weapons, an exit from nuclear power is still being discussed. Austria is still surrounded by some potentially dangerous nuclear power plants. They are often over 30 years old and have inadequate safety precautions.
Around Austria there are some nuclear power plants that the environmental protection organization “Global 2000″ classifies as a safety risk:

Fittingly: A visit to Austria’s only nuclear reactor – take a look behind the scenes here.

The Beznau nuclear power plant is known as a high-risk reactor due to its old age – the reactor blocks are more than 30 years old. It is around 110 kilometers from the Austrian border. The nuclear power plant is also controversial in Switzerland. Opponents of nuclear power have been fighting for a final shutdown of the power plant for years. It is one of the oldest operating nuclear power plants in the world.

The Dukovany nuclear power plant is located in southern Moravia, just 100 kilometers north of Vienna. The 4 reactor blocks went into operation between 1985 and 1987. The nuclear power plant has no so-called containment, a safety precaution that encloses the reactor pressure vessel in order to protect the environment from radioactive contamination in the event of an accident. The nuclear power plant is therefore one of the high-risk reactors.

The Bohunice nuclear power plant with its 2 reactor blocks is around 85 kilometers from Vienna as the crow flies – in operation since 1984 and 1985, respectively. While the Bohunice 1 and Bohunice 2 units were shut down in 2006 and 2008, the remaining units are scheduled to be operated at least until 2025 – even if the nuclear power plant, like Dukovany, does not have containment. The most recent incident occurred in Block 1 in 2010: A short circuit led to a fire in the administration building next to the disconnected but still radioactive block. The fire was extinguished in time.
A decommissioning is not planned in the near future – on the contrary: If the environmental impact assessment (EIA) is positive, the construction of another reactor in Bohunice is to begin in 2021.

The situation is similar at the Mochovce nuclear power plant (2 reactor blocks): Containment is also missing here. Construction began in the 1980s and two of the four reactors built have been in operation since the late 1990s. Reactors 3 and 4 were in ruins.
The nuclear power plant is just under 200 kilometers from Vienna and is highly controversial in Austria. Green politician Eva Glawischnig – she wrote her dissertation on power plants close to the border – even sued the power plant operator Slovenské Elektrárne because of the risk from radioactive emissions. However, in 2005 she failed with her lawsuit in the second instance before the Regional Court for Civil Law Matters in Vienna. Security deficiencies were not specifically demonstrable, it was said at the time. Today the nuclear power plant has a few more years under its belt and environmentalists are still recommending shutdown. On November 26, 2010, an incident in Block 2 caused a stir: a turbo generator burned.
It was not until April 2017 that “” Global 2000 “” requested the temporary shutdown of the Mochovce nuclear power plant: According to environmentalists, one of the values from several water samples had exceeded the drinking water limit value for radioactive hydrogen (tritium) by 13 times. Since 2008, the ruins of reactors 3 and 4 have been rebuilt. Reactor 3 is now to go into operation in mid-2019, with completely outdated technology, as “” Global 2000 “” criticized.

The Paks nuclear power plant, which is around 300 kilometers from Vienna, has 4 reactor blocks, some of which are more than 30 years old. As with its neighboring nuclear power plants, there is no trace of a containment. In 2013 there was an incident in Unit 3: the water level in the cooling pool suddenly fell, massive rust damage with multiple rust perforations was found on the cooling pipes built into the concrete ceilings. The damage was repaired and the system was put back into operation, even if the reason for the occurrence of the rust could not be clarified according to “” Global 2000 “”.
A new addition to the existing nuclear power plant has been planned in Hungary with Paks II since 2014. For this purpose, Russia granted a loan of 10 billion euros. In February 2018, Austria brought a lawsuit against the expansion of the Paks II nuclear power plant to the Court of the European Union. In 2017, the EU Commission approved state aid for Hungary to be used for the construction of Paks II. “” Austria has always been a country that has vehemently spoken out against nuclear power. For our nature, for our environment and our unique landscape, we have to take up this David versus Goliath fight. Nuclear power must have no place in Europe. We will not deviate an inch from this line, “said Sustainability Minister Elisabeth Köstinger in a broadcast.

According to Global 2000, Krsko is one of the “” most endangered nuclear power plants of all. The nuclear power plant with 1 reactor block has been running since 1981 and is located in an earthquake area. Several incidents have occurred there in recent years:
- 2012 Emergency shutdown: leaves and sludge clog the filters of the cooling pumps as a result of flooding in the cooling water supply line.
- 2013 Emergency shutdown: An isolation valve on the main steam line fails.
- 2013 Repair: When a fuel element is transported from the reactor, a 0.5 meter long part breaks off and sinks to the bottom of the spent fuel pool. 5 of the 121 fuel elements in the reactor are damaged or leak and must be replaced
Krsko is only around 100 kilometers as the crow flies from the southern Styrian city of Leibnitz.

The Mühleberg nuclear power plant has been in operation since 1971; it is identical to the Fukushima nuclear power plant. Experts consider it to be particularly endangered because it is right on the Wohlensee dam. In the event of an earthquake, the dam would break and flood the nuclear power plant.
There is only one solution for environmentalists: the nuclear power plants must be switched off. This applies to all reactors that are located in earthquake areas, that are more than 30 years old or that do not have containment.
And what about within the EU? According to “” Global 2000 “” 14 of the 28 states operate nuclear power plants. The environmental protection organization classifies many of them as risk factors. An overview:
Color code of the nuclear power plant card: RED = high risk reactor, boiling water reactor 69 or GE Mark I (Fukushima type) ORANGE = high risk reactor, no containment YELLOW = high risk reactor, older than 30 years BROWN = high risk reactor, earthquake area GRAY = reactor in operation BLACK = reactor shut down

A ship with over 30 passengers on board caught fire off the coast of California. The number of victims after a devastating fire on a tour boat off the coast of California has risen to 25. Divers found their bodies in the sunken boat on Monday (local time), media reported. The search for nine missing persons continued.
The search for the missing passengers would continue until further notice, said Monica Rochester of the Coast Guard. She spoke of a “” very tragic incident “”. One would prepare for the worst.
The passengers of the excursion boat were sleeping inside the boat when the fire broke out for reasons that are still unknown.
