Beers in Germany and worldwide

In Germany there are almost 5000 different beers from more than 1300 breweries, according to the digital portal of the “German Brewers Association”. That’s so much that theoretically every German could try a new beer every day for 13.5 years. Worldwide, the number of types of beer is estimated at 10,000 to 15,000, writes the online portal “Bier”.

Favorite beer of the Germans

In 2015, the per capita consumption of beer in Germany was almost 106 liters. That sounds like a lot at first glance. But beer consumption has continued to decline in recent years. For comparison: in 1980 the per capita consumption was an impressive 145 liters.

When choosing their beer, Germans are increasingly relying on regional beer brands. The industry magazine “Inside” confirmed this trend in its analysis for 2015. Öttinger won the title of the best-selling beer brand in Germany for several years. In 2015 the brand was replaced by Krombacher and had to be content with 2nd place. Bitburger ranks third among the best-selling beer brands in Germany, according to “Inside”.

Upper, lower and spontaneous: the differences

Different fermentation methods are used in the production of beer. The focus of all three methods is on yeast. If a beer is bottom-fermented, the yeast sinks to the bottom after fermentation. With a top-fermented beer, the yeast first rises and then sinks later. Another difference is that top-fermented beers are brewed at a higher temperature.

Spontaneous beers are brewed without added yeast. This is the classic fermentation method. As “Bild online” writes, with this method yeast spores migrate from the air into the open vessel and thus start the fermentation process.

Spontaneous beers are for example Lambic or Kriek. Bottom-fermented beers, on the other hand, are pils, export beers or lager beers. Kölsch, wheat beer or Altbier are characterized by a top-fermenting process.

The beer and the calories

Beer not only tastes delicious, it is also considered a calorie bomb. After all, the beer belly has to come from somewhere. But the cool blonde is not really fat. Half a liter of beer has an average of 210 calories. That’s less than the same amount of apple juice with 250 calories.

What is fatal for the stomach is, on the one hand, the number of glasses drunk. On the other hand, the alcohol stimulates the appetite. Thus, the increased food intake creates additional kilos.

Alcohol in non-alcoholic beer

It sounds paradoxical, but alcohol-free beer also shows traces of alcohol. According to the “German Brewers Association”, alcohol-free beers may contain up to 0.5 percent alcohol by law. But you don’t have to worry about it. Studies have clearly shown that these small traces of alcohol have ashley madison commercial no physiological effects on the body.
