NASCAR at Watkins Glen picks, odds: Kyle Busch going for weekend sweep

Who Chooses the checkered flag?

Here are our selections for this season’s last road race.

Winner: Kyle Busch
Rowdy is out for blood after taking his first checkered flag of the season last week at Pocono. After winning his first Xfinity Series race at The Glen on Saturday, Busch will start from the pole on Sunday because he chases his third career win at the track. From our perspective, so long as Busch does not wreck or see his engine neglect, he must at least finish in the top five.

Contenders: Joey Logano, Martin Truex Jr..
We’re simply not prepared to give up about the 2016 championship event, particularly after his second-place complete in the NASCAR Xfinity Series race. Logano marched his entire Cup crew out on Saturday and they didn’t disappoint. His team knows it is win or go home, so expect the 2015 Watkins Glen winner to take his shot Victory Lane on Sunday. As for Truex Jr., well his r??sum?? speaks for itself. The points leader owns eight top-fives, 14 stage wins, three race wins plus a ridiculous 29 playoff points. Truex Jr. directed the most overall laps at Sonoma in June before suffering engine failure with just 25 to go. Best think he hasn’t forgotten about that…

Wild Card: AJ Allmendinger
We were not so high on the road course specialist back in Sonoma, and for good reason. Despite almost winning a stage in June, Allmendinger finished 35th. This time around we think that it’s going to differ. Despite a mediocre run in clinic, Allmendinger’s results at Watkins Glen talk for themselves. In addition to a triumph in 2014, he’s got an average finish within the top 10 in eight career starts there. Don’t be shocked if Allmendinger plays spoiler to a motorist on the playoff bubble Sunday.
